Dental Implants: Expectations, Procedure, Recovery

Dental Implant | The Dental Care Center

We usually recommend dental implants to our Van Nuys practice patients because they are by far the best tooth replacement available. Dental implants most closely mimic a person’s natural teeth in both form and function. Although they are a financial investment, with proper care, they can last a lifetime.

What Are Patient Expectations After Dental Implant Surgery?

Most patients report their surprise finding that the dental implant procedure is easier than they thought it would—and that recovery is much quicker. The vast majority of patients are happy with their decision even though the process takes place over a period of several months. When the implants have been integrated with the jawbone and the dental crowns have been placed, they find they can chew, eat, and speak just like they were able to with their natural teeth.

What Does the Dental Implant Procedure Entail?

Dental implants comprise the following:

  • The post, which is a titanium metal piece that takes the place of the tooth root
  • The abutment, which is what sits atop the post and receives the dental crown
  • The restoration, which is the dental crown that is affixed to the abutment and takes the place of the natural tooth

After the dental implant surgery, patients must wait for a period of four to six months while the implant permanently integrates with the bone. Once that has taken place, they can get the dental crown, and the process is complete.

What Is the Dental Implant Recovery Process Like?

Some patients experience swelling, bruising, or minor bleeding, so they can take pain relievers as recommended by their dentist. It’s crucial in the days following the surgery to avoid contaminating or irritating the surgical site.

During the first month after the implant has been placed, the site is still healing so patients should practice care to avoid interfering with the integration process.
