Is a Filling Necessary?
The short answer to that question is a resounding yes. A filling Is necessary to prevent the decay in the tooth from spreading. A filling is necessary to save the tooth structure. If you don’t fill a cavity, it will just continue to get worse.
The Filling Options Available
Teeth can be filled with any number of materials, including amalgam, gold, and composite. The most common filling material in our office is composite fillings.
Composite fillings have an advantage over other materials in that they are made to match the color of the tooth structure. With a composite filling, your filling blends in with your tooth and can barely be seen.
The Steps Involved with Getting a Filling
When you come in to get a filling, the first thing your dentist will probably do is to numb the area where the tooth is to be filled. Once the actual filling procedure starts, you won’t feel anything. The numbing will wear off just an hour or two after your tooth is filled.
During the filling process, your dentist will use a special drill to get rid of the decayed portion of the tooth. The area will be cleaned of any remaining debris and the filling will be placed. The filling will be polished and checked for comfort when biting down—and the procedure will be complete.
After getting the filling, you might experience some sensitivity in the area for a few weeks. This is normal and should normalize soon.
