Everything You Wanted to Know about Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are typically the last of your adult teeth to emerge at the very back of your mouth. There are usually two on the top and two on the bottom. When there is not enough room for them to emerge straight, wisdom teeth may be painful and can lead to future dental problems. Since they are hard to reach, they can also be harder to clean properly, leading to gum disease or other issues.

Not everyone needs to undergo this procedure, though there are different reasons why people might need to:

  • Impacted wisdom teeth– Due to their position in your mouth, they might grow out in a wrong angle and cause pain.
  • Pericoronitis– Inflammation of the gums over your wisdom teeth
  • Not enough space– Some people don’t have the space for an extra molar to fit.
  • Prevention of gum disease– Wisdom teeth are not easy to reach, and improper cleaning can result in cavities or gum disease.

How to Prepare for Your Procedure

Dr. Suh will go over the right treatment plan for you, based on your medical needs and current medications. The goal is to make sure you are comfortable and understand all the steps. It’s understandable to feel nervous about removing your wisdom teeth, but rest assured that the procedure is incredibly common and it is very rare to experience complications.

Once the procedure is over, be sure to follow the post-procedure instructions that your dentist has tailored for you, especially in the first two weeks after.
