Taking Antibiotics Before My Dental Appointment
In the past, patients have been told by their doctors that antibiotics before dental procedures were necessary either due to a heart condition or prosthetic joint. However, what many doctors fail to tell their patients is that the guidelines have changed over recent years. Many of the pre-existing heart conditions in fact no longer need premedication. In addition, in 2015 the American Dental Association stated that “In general, for patients with prosthetic joint implants, prophylactic antibiotics are not recommended prior to dental procedures to prevent prosthetic joint infection.” They do however say that if there have been complications in the past with joint replacement surgery they should consult with their orthopedic surgeon and he or she should prescribe the right antibiotic regime and not the dentist.
