Sedation Dentistry Can Help With Dental Anxiety: What You Need to Know
Most people don’t enjoy going to the dentist twice each year for examinations and cleanings, but there are some people who deal with serious anxiety over visiting the dentist. Many of these people put off dental appointments until their oral health reaches emergency status with a toothache or some other issue that requires more complex treatment—perpetuating the fear cycle.
You don’t have to put off the dental care you need because you are anxious about going to the dentist. Sedation dentistry is available for our Van Nuys patients who suffer from dental anxiety.
Types of Sedation
A local anesthetic is the most common type of sedation dentistry that is usually done for common treatments such as fillings. Your dentist will apply a gel to numb the area before administering the anesthetic. You won’t feel any pain during treatment.
Nitrous oxide is an anesthetic that is breathed in through a mask similar to an oxygen mask. In moments, it relaxes patients, even giving them a feeling of euphoria so they will feel completely at east during treatment. Because it leaves the system as quickly as it enters, patients are safe to drive themselves home after receiving nitrous.
Patients who have even higher levels of anxiety might benefit from oral sedation. Your dentist will prescribe a pill you can take about an hour prior to your appointment. The medication will make you relaxed and drowsy during your treatment, and you probably won’t remember much about it. Keep in mind that you will need a ride to and from your appointment if you opt for this type of sedation dentistry.
