A visit to your dentist doesn’t have to be a chore or an activity you dread. Dentists and hygienists want to help you take care of your teeth and gums so you can enjoy a lifelong healthy smile.

Our team at The Dental Care Center provides comprehensive dentistry to patients of all ages in an inviting and non-judgmental atmosphere. Whether it's your first ever dental visit or you haven't been to the dentist in a while, we are here to support you and help you achieve your smile’s best level of health.

Here's what you can expect during your first dental exam at The Dental Care Center:

#1 Review of Medical and Dental Histories

Your dentist in Van Nuys will do a thorough review of your dental and medical histories. If you have any health conditions or take any medications, the dentist will need to know this. The mouth is the window to the body, meaning oral health is directly linked to whole-body health--what affects one can affect the other. That’s why your dentist needs to know as much as possible about your wellness, so he or she can help keep you as healthy and safe as possible.

#2 Oral Health Examination

The oral health examination allows the dentist to look at your mouth as a whole, including your teeth, gums, tongue, lips, throat, and other soft tissues. During this exam, your dentist will note any abnormalities, look for signs of decay or disease, and determine which treatments or preventive methods are best for you to maintain the vitality of your smile.

#3 Safe Digital X-Rays

A first visit is similar to a routine visit but with a few extra requirements. New patient appointments typically require digital x-rays unless you have had x-rays within the past couple of years. X-rays allow the dentist to take an in-depth look at your mouth, including the teeth, gums, and supporting bone structures.

#4 Teeth Cleaning and Polish

The hygienist will deeply clean your teeth to remove plaque, tartar, and any other cavity-causing bacteria. If your teeth are sensitive, please tell your hygienist so we can provide you with a numbing option during your cleaning. If it’s been a while since you have had your teeth cleaned, the hygienist may clean below the gumline to remove plaque buildup. Cleaning below the gumline is essential for preventing gingivitis and gum disease. Once your teeth are completely cleaned and polished, your smile will feel smooth and fresh.

#5 Periodontal Chart

A periodontal chart is a method used to check the gums for any pockets where bacteria can collect. This also helps your dentist determine the health of your gums, your risk for gum disease, and any necessary treatment options.

#6 Oral Cancer Screening

during every visit to the dentist, you will receive an oral cancer screening. Your dentist will look at your mouth to check for and identify abnormalities. You may also receive coaching on how to reduce your risk for oral cancer.
