The mere mention of the words “root canal” is enough to send a shiver down the spine of just about everyone. This is actually extremely unfair.
Despite their intimidating reputation, root canals are straightforward and, most importantly, pain-free procedures. Today we’re offering up everything you need to know about root canal therapy.
What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a procedure in which a tooth´s infected or injured internal ¨pulp (nerves, blood vessels, tissue) is removed in order to relieve a patient’s pain and prevent further decay to the tooth or an infection that could spread to other parts of the body.
In a root canal, the dentist thoroughly cleans and numbs the tooth and the surrounding area in order to ensure that the patient is free of pain during the procedure. Then, after creating an access point in the tooth to expose the tooth’s interior, using specialized instruments, the dentist removes the damaged pulp.
At this point, the dentist cleans out the remaining space and seals it with a material to prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth and create a healthy environment for tissue to grow back. With proper care, the effects of a root canal can last for ten to fifteen years with no need for retreatment.
What To Expect After a Root Canal
After a seven-to-ten-day recovery period during which the patient may be prescribed antibiotics, the patient and dentist follow up to choose between the long-term options of simply leaving the opening sealed with filling material or placing a dental crown over the remainder of the tooth. Dental crowns are an extremely popular post-root canal option, as they strengthen the bite, provide support to surrounding teeth, and improve the appearance of the patient’s smile.
As always, make sure to consult with a qualified dentist to determine whether a root canal is an appropriate solution and to arrange a treatment schedule.
