Did you know that millions of Americans are missing one or more teeth? According to the American College of Prosthodontists, nearly 178 million U.S. residents have gaps in their smile. Unfortunately, missing teeth do more than affect your willingness to smile in public and your ability to eat your favorite foods; they can cause your other teeth to shift and decrease your jawbone density.

Dental implants are a fantastic tooth replacement option, giving you a smile you can be proud of.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post that mimics your tooth’s roots; once it heals, a custom crown, bridge, or denture replaces your missing teeth.

Implants include three components:

  • Implant — This post is surgically placed into your jaw. It will need to heal and fuse with your jawbone in a process known as osseointegration.
  • Abutment — This connector piece is added to the implant after it heals.
  • Restoration — This is the part you’ll see, either a crown, bridge, or denture.

Caring for Your Dental Implants

With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, and you’ll care for them much like your natural teeth.

Here are some tips for success:

  • Make sure to practice good oral hygiene; brush your teeth twice a day and floss each day.
  • Rinse your mouth with antibacterial mouthwash to remove harmful bacteria.
  • Avoid biting down on hard and sticky foods, as they can damage your implants.
  • Visit your Van Nuys dentist every six months for a routine checkup and cleaning.
  • Wear a mouthguard at night if you grind your teeth or clench your jaw.
  • Watch for any signs of swelling, loose implants, or other symptoms, and contact our dental office right away if you think there’s an issue.
