The types of dental fillings in Van Nuys, CA, vary, but the most common materials used are amalgam and composite.
Most of my patients prefer composite (or tooth-colored fillings) because they are color-matched to blend with tooth enamel.
Amalgam vs. Tooth-Colored Fillings
- Amalgam Fillings: Amalgams are silver and contain mercury. However, studies have shown that the amount of mercury in amalgam fillings is not hazardous. Yet, some patients are sensitive to this component or prefer a mercury-free option. Amalgam tends to react to hot and cold, contracting and expanding. Additionally, I may remove more healthy tooth material to set an amalgam restoration.
- Tooth-Colored Fillings: These restorations are made of composite resin and applied to the teeth in malleable form. The composite is layered and sculpted to close the treated cavity. Composite fillings do not contain mercury, do not react to temperature changes, and I may be able to remove less tooth material to set this popular restoration.
I can also use composite resin to bond your teeth. This means concealing chips, flaws, discoloration, and other imperfections.
Lowering Your Tooth Decay Risks
Of course, no cavities are always the best course. To reduce your risks for tooth decay and other oral health complications, be sure to visit my dental office every six months for checkups and teeth cleanings. You should also brush and floss your teeth at least twice daily.
Adopting a low-sugar, low-acid diet is always helpful for tooth decay. Finally, be sure to wear a mouthguard if you compete in sports and a nightguard if you grind and clench your teeth at night (bruxism).
